Discussion:
Will they ever release all seasons of Stooges on DVD

I'd like to think that with the success of TV shows releasing entire
seasons of episodes being a success, that eventually this could happen
with the Stooges.

Simpsons, Family Guy, Futurama, Sanford and Son, Are you being served?,
Married with Children... all have entire seasons available.

All I still see for the stooges are the DVD's with the same episodes
coupled together since the days of VHS. In my quest to have every
Curly episode out there, it seems that some are left out or only seen
on TV(edited with commercials).

My idea is that they could release every season by the year.

Season 1 1934
Season 2 1935
Season 3 1936
Season 4 1937
Through
Season 11 1946

Will they ever do this?

Sweety, maybe because The Three Stooges never made TV shows or were
involved in any 'seasons'. They made six to eight two-reeler
theatrical shorts released every year, not episodes as part of a
television sitcom series.

If Sony ever releases all the Stooges shorts in one box set they would
call it something like: The Three Stooges Complete Shorts Collection
1934-1958. But this won't happned, darling so no need to fret over it
and lose sleep tonight.

Let me rephrase.

What if they released, in chronological order, starting with the year
1935, all shorts made in that particular year (include extras like
bios, pictures). Then wait a while and release the shorts made in 1936
and repeat.

This is similar to how they release "seasons" of TV shows. There are
lots of collectors who buy these "seasons" and the powers that be
should arrange and sell Stooge "shorts" in the same manner.

I made the comparison to other TV shows, because they have huge
followings and are making money selling these "seasons".
Simpsons and Futurama fans were pleased of the idea of getting an
entire series on DVD.

Sorry, but it would be nice to have every (Curly) episode in order of
release. I do not expect them to release all at the same time but
gradually.

Nah, those of us with a lick of sense got it the first time. I would
say that as long as there weren't too many wide ranges in # of shorts
per annum (as opposed to alum) then your idea would be as good for
dividing up the spoils as any*.

Even though less people would buy the Shemp & Besser sets, the big
companies know that there are plenty of people who want ALL of their
fave characters' shows on DVD, which is why TV shows that went way
downhill after a certain time (jumping the shark?) still get the deluxe
"complete set" treatment.

*I can't find the appropriate reference book to check the stats myself
right now.

I think what Miss Glamour said was on the money. Columbia will
probably never release all the shorts. The reason escapes me at the
moment as to why not, but someone here should be able to tell you why.

Regarding your getting every Curly episode, you may want to try Ebay.
While you could find every Curly episode for sale there, chances are
(in order to ensure you're getting ALL the Curly episodes), you will
need to buy all 190 shorts. Try a search for "Three Stooges DVD" and
list the highest prices first - you will surely find something of
interest!

Some 15-20 years ago, superstation WTBS showed all of the shorts in
chronological order in a late night/early morning slot. That's how I saw
the four DePalma-as-Shemp shorts. They probably had the Chicago package
with all 190 shorts. Lighting could strike again!

The other day I was cleaning and rearranging some stuff and came across
about twenty Three Stooges VHS store bought tapes that I realized had
many shorts that have yet to be released on DVD. In particular I was
pleased to come across tapes that had THE PEST MAN WINS, SQUAREHEADS OF
THE ROUNDTABLE, VAGABOND LOAFERS, ANTS IN THE PANTRY and HALF-SHOT
SHOOTERS. Glad I kept them. Who knows when these will get a DVD
release?

Just FYI:
I started a chrono stooge post in a.b.m.3-stooges. I am posting all of
the shorts, minus a few. I'm up to 100 as of today and am including
all movie cameos as well. The flood started on 10/14 I think. Whatever
I am missing I am pulling off of P2P or getting in fills in that same
group from others.
Bottom line, forget buying DVDs, DL all of these eps and make your own
chrono DVDs to play on a Philips 642 DVD player.

Well, the longer they wait, the less likely it is they'll get my money,
since I'm rapidly filling in the shorts collection between the Sony
DVDs, dubs from the Columbia VHSs, AMC marathons, WSBK and Spike TV
(carefully editing out ad breaks for DVD-R). At the moment, I have all
but 36 of the 190 shorts (all but 1 of the Curly shorts).

There hasn't been a Three Stooges shorts compilation DVD releases in
over a year. Instead they dump THREE STOOGES MEET HERCULES. I don't
want the features only the shorts. When are they going to release
another shorts collection?

Personally, I welcome all the shorts including ones with Shemp and Joe
Besser. If there were two sets out with either all Curly or Shemp, I'd
pick up the Shemps first. I'd like to see the Stooges with Joe Besser
two-reelers also. But since Sony goes so slow in there releases I doubt
we'll never see all 190 shorts in our lifetime. Hope I am wrong.

Actually, there were "seasons" in silent short series. The season
usually ran from fall to spring. I have a copy of an ad for Jimmie
Adams' Christie Paramount shorts hailing excellent quality for "the
27-28 season".

Like later radio, Broadway and TV seasons, motion picture seasons typically
started in September, even though new shorts would be released through
August. The way I understand shorts distribution, exhibitors would commit
to 12 Felixes, 8 Mermaids and 6 Lupino Lanes (for example) over the course
of a year rather than cherry-picking the best ones. That's why when a star
was unable to complete a series, the studio had to scramble for a
replacement to fulfill sales commitments.

That is interesting, Jim. Did they include photos, synopses, alternate
titles, running time, etc? Or was it just a list of titles?

Was this in Film Daily or a separate booklet sent to theaters by Roach and
MGM distribution outlets?

It's a small hardback booklet published by MGM and it appears to be for
theater bookers. It has an opening message from Nicholas Schenk,
president of Loews, Inc. and a list of all the MGM sxchanges around the
country. I checked out the address for the exchange here in Dallas and
it's a vacant lot. I can send you some scans if you'd like to see them.
